New Ideas I’ve Been Working On and What’s Next

I’ve been watching clay crafting videos and wanting to get into sculpting. I get so giddy when I start a new craft! I just adore crafting and finding different mediums that I can use to bring my illustrations to life.

I was Interviewed for Storyteller Academy by Author/Illustrator, Arree Chung!

This writing and illustrating journey to publication is a tough one and it’s important to use all the resources and good advice we can get along the way!

I was interviewed not too long ago by the creator of Storyteller Academy, Arree Chung. You may also know him as the author and illustrator of the Ninja series, Out!, and my personal favorite, Mixed!

Seattle Writer’s Workshop – Pitching to Agents

    So, I did it… I went to my first ever writer’s workshop/conference!

The short version of how the conference went…it was amazing!!!

Now, if you’d like to know more, here we go.

My mom and I went on this journey together, as I took my first steps in the outside world introducing myself as a writer/illustrator. We left for Seattle early enough to stop in Olympia for lunch and to see a bit of the town. We both agreed, the capital of Washington state is a beautiful place to visit!

We continued our journey up to Seattle, and made it to the hotel just before check-in, the night before the conference. We ate our meals at the hotel in their Cascadia Grill restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

There was plenty of time to scout out the next day’s event locations and everything was very straight forward at the hotel. When Saturday came, I was ready.

I had my book dummy in hand for my first alliterative picture book, Benny the Bookworm, and had plans to pitch one agent that day, in-and-amongst going to five different workshops on being a writer and the business of writing (See post on second alliterative picture book, Wishweaver here).

I mingled at the event. I met one of the event coordinators, Brian Klems, and introduced myself. I got to meet several other writers of various genres and we exchanged our business cards.

    Mingling…check!

The first class I took was: Book Marketing from your Couch: Social Media 101 and I found it very informative. I was trying not to be nervous for my pitch that was taking place right in between that session and the next, but no such luck. As much as I love my story, and I am excited to pursue my career as both a writer and an illustrator, it was nerve-wracking to put myself and my work out into the literary world.

Would my illustrations be up to par with other illustrators in the children’s book market?

Would my writing catch the interest of others besides just my friends, family, and critique group?

What if I completely forget my pitch in the worst possible moment?

The doubts of we creatives can be high. They often call it “Imposter Syndrome” or that feeling of inadequacy because you haven’t “made it” yet in whatever it is you are trying to “make it” in. In the writing world, it’s feeling odd calling yourself a writer and/or illustrator when your credentials haven’t been built up yet. Saying you are an illustrator but not having had any illustrations printed in anything of major consequence.

I now have some illustration publishing credits with the

Be a Beta Reader for Adeline and the Mystic Berries!

    It’s finally happening!

I’m just about finished editing Adeline and the Mystic Berries and this time around I want your thoughts before I continue querying agents with the manuscript. I am looking for beta readers, so here I am asking for your help!

But what does a beta reader do?

Rather than tell you myself, I thought I’d jump on over to Dan’s blog and tell you what he has to say. I couldn’t have said it any better myself:

    What’s a beta reader?

Well, it’s kind of a big deal. You get to read the whole book before everybody else and then tell me what you think. Also, you get to be one of the first people to post an honest review on Amazon.

I did a few posts on being a beta, so you can read more if you click HERE to learn more, but basically you’ll…

    1. Read the finished story.
    2. Give the author (me) feedback by email
    3. Post a review on Amazon when the book releases.

    That’s about it.

What is Adeline and the Mystic Berries about?

If you haven’t read my other posts about this story, that’s okay. Here is the rundown. This is a Middle Grade (ages 9-12) Fantasy story about a ten-year-old girl named Adeline.

Adeline Picot has never seen color. She is an artist whose drawings of the world are breathtaking to any who see them, but to her they’re all the same: black and white. Her imagination and innate talent for sewing are stitched through every hand-me-down she owns, now adorned with crow’s feathers, buttons, and secret pockets. In the impoverished village of Asher, Adeline’s talents are useless, for she has the unfortunate destiny of becoming a sock maker like the rest of her family.

Before taking up her trade, Adeline will finish schooling in Evanox, where being poor with an eclectic taste in fashion attracts the negative attentions of her teacher and some fellow students. One day, when the bullying escalates, Adeline escapes into the Forgotten Forest.

There she will happen upon the last bit of magic kept well hidden through the centuries. There she will discover that her world has not always been colorless, and she may be the only one who can bring it all back.

    Still Interested? I hope so!

What I am Working On : Editing Adeline and the Mystic Berries

    Updated: 5/21/16

This past week I have begun another round of edits for the first book I ever wrote, Adeline and the Mystic Berries. With lots of amazing feedback from agents, I thought it important that I gather help in regards to editing.

When you get to the querying stage, it is important to remember that this will not be the last time you’ll need to edit your story. If it is, and all of your work is accepted by an agent or publisher, I commend you. More often than not though, you will need to revisit your story at least another time or two (perhaps even more than that).

Don’t despair. Through editing, we take a book that has a lot of promise, and turn it into one that thousands of readers will love.

For Adeline’s story, my feedback was very consistent: great concept, love the characters, but slow to start (needing to get to the action quicker). There were also some other minor things that were suggested to hone the story down to the necessities. All of the tips I received were very helpful.

The most important thing to remember was, I was receiving feedback at all. Getting

    rejections

    New Video: Adeline Doll Reveal!

In order to change her destiny and the barren, colorless world, ten-year-old Adeline will have to unleash the last bit of magic.

Adeline Picot, is the main protagonist from my Middle Grade Fantasy story, Adeline and the Mystic Berries.

I have talked about the book on and off, and, as you know, I am now working on re-editing the story before I continue querying to find a literary agent.

In the meantime, I couldn’t wait to begin crocheting up some of the characters from this story that is very near and dear to me. It was the first book I ever wrote, and the first time an idea struck in my head that stayed.

I had always thought being a writer would be a wonderful job to have, but prior to coming up with the idea for Adeline and the Mystic Berries, never thought I would ever have good enough ideas myself. She proved me wrong, and here we are.

My vision is to have a line of dolls from the book that other crocheters can make. I want readers who love the story, to be able to have their very own dolls from the book!

So, without further ado, here is a video I made for my
