C2C Dogghan CAL 2020: Introduction. Let’s get started!

Today is Earth Day, and with everything going on in the world, what better way to celebrate than to get excited about something fun to do at home while we’re stuck inside anyway? I hope the Dogghan is a light amidst the stress and seclusion. I also am sending good vibes out to you and yours to stay safe and healthy. As you know, we are in this together. Without further ado… let’s talk about dogs! 

If you were following along with me during the Catghan CAL 2019, you’ll recognize that this blanket is designed a bit different. 

Not only are there squares in this graphgan, this time around, there are rectangles too! 

I had to. How else would I show the size of some pampered pooches as opposed to others? You wouldn’t want your Pomeranian and your Great Dane’s looking the same size would you?

So, I got creative. Don’t worry, though… We’ll start small, and work our way up to the biggins’. 

I’ve filmed myself working through the first two squares of this Dogghan for those of you who are new to C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. If you have a chance, you can watch some of my videos on Ink & Stitches YouTube to show you the C2C technique, or you can wait until the first Dogghan video and follow along with me! 

For this Dogghan, we’ll be doing 18 pups. 

7    –    Squares (Smaller Pups)

10  –    Rectangles the size of 2 squares together (Longer or Taller Breeds)

1    –    Rectangle the size of 3 squares together (Extra Large Dane)

The small squares are 20×20. The first 10 rectangles come in at 20×40. The largest rectangle is a whopping 20×60 squares!

We’ll start from the most basic designs, that have less color changes, and work our way to the Great Dane! The files for each pattern will be attached to the posts in PDF format for easy download.

We’ll be starting the first square: Cup O’ Chihuahua Tea, on May 5, and a new square/rectangle will be released each week following on Tuesday.

So, in the meantime, it’s time to gather your supplies:

Materials Needed:

  1. Size H crochet hook
  2. Bobbins (or some way to keep your yarns separate. I got mine from the Dollar Tree which is now selling them online by a case of 12. Each pack has 6 so that’s a lot, but you’d be amazed how quickly you get them used during a graphgan!)
  3. Yarn Needle
  4. Scissors
  5. Yarn of course! Below is the Master Color Key for the blanket! Keep in mind, if there was only one green (for example), I would often just call the color “green”, even when it was closer to a dark or a light green. For this reason, I’ve tried my best to make this chart reflect the actual color.  I also put a number to the right of each color with how many of the patterns have that color in them out of the 18 total squares/rectangles. I hope this is helpful if you are not making a Scrapghan, but are planning to buy all the yarn up front!

NOTE: When I designed this pattern, it was in an attempt to use up my yarn stash. Because of that, the exact amounts of yarn you’ll need are a bit tough to say. If I say to use red, and you have a burgundy color, use that! If I say yellow and you have a varying shade of yellow, use that! I didn’t want all the greens to match or the blues, etc… and because of that, this blanket couldn’t be any more colorful if I tried!
